  • Beyond the Traditional SUV: The Future of BMW and Mercedes-Benz SUV Coupes

BMW revolutionized the automotive world in 2008 with the introduction of the BMW X6 , a vehicle that blended the muscularity of an SUV with the sleek roofline of a coupe. This bold move birthed a new segment known as the SUV Coupe , a trend that soon caught on with other luxury car manufacturers. BMW further expanded this category by releasing the BMW X4 , a smaller sibling to the X6. However, recent reports indicate that BMW is discontinuing the X4, signaling a shift in its product strategy. BMW Discontinues the X4: A Strategic Decision As BMW prepares to phase out the X4 , this decision may reflect a broader move within the industry to streamline model lineups and focus on profitability. With the popularity of compact and midsize SUVs soaring, automakers are looking to simplify their offerings, and niche products like the X4 may no longer align with their long-term vision. The X4 has been praised for combining the high-riding capabilities of an SUV with the sporty appeal of a coupe, making it a unique choice in the luxury market. However, it has always lived in the shadow of its larger, more powerful sibling, the X6. BMW’s decision to discontinue the X4 suggests that this particular segment may have reached its peak, at least for now. Mercedes-Benz Streamlines Its Coupe-SUV Lineup BMW is not the only automaker considering changes to its SUV coupe lineup. Mercedes-Benz , another pioneer in the segment, may also be rethinking its approach. There are reports that the luxury brand is contemplating the discontinuation of both the GLC Coupe  and GLE Coupe  as part of a broader effort to simplify its product portfolio. These models have been popular options for those seeking the versatility of an SUV with the styling cues of a coupe. However, as Mercedes-Benz looks toward the future, it may be deciding that a leaner lineup, focused on core models, will be more efficient and profitable. The decision would follow Mercedes’ recent streamlining of its coupe and convertible models, a move designed to better align with customer demand and technological advancements. If the GLC Coupe and GLE Coupe are indeed phased out, it will mark the end of an era for the brand’s SUV coupe offerings. What’s Next for the SUV Coupe Segment? Despite these potential changes, both the GLC Coupe and GLE Coupe will remain available through 2025 , starting at $60,450  and $77,550 , respectively, with high-performance AMG options  for enthusiasts looking for extra power and exclusivity. The AMG models push these coupe-SUVs to new heights, blending luxury, performance, and unique design into a single package. Looking ahead, a new GLC  is expected to debut in 2026 , but the design direction remains unclear. It is possible that Mercedes-Benz could consolidate its coupe-SUV offerings or develop an entirely new approach to meet evolving customer preferences. Either way, the future of the SUV coupe segment seems to be in flux, as automakers balance the desires of consumers with the realities of an increasingly competitive market. The Impact of Discontinuation on Luxury Car Buyers For luxury car buyers, the potential end of models like the X4, GLC Coupe, and GLE Coupe might feel like the closing of a chapter. These vehicles have long been a symbol of innovation, blending the utility of SUVs with the flair of coupe styling. Their discontinuation could signal a shift in customer preferences, with buyers now gravitating toward more traditional SUV designs or completely new segments like electric vehicles (EVs) and crossovers. While the SUV coupe may have once been the darling of the luxury car market, the industry’s current direction suggests that these niche vehicles may no longer be as viable in the long term. However, buyers still interested in the coupe-SUV experience can look forward to the remaining stock for 2025, ensuring they still have a chance to drive one of these distinctive models. Final Thoughts BMW’s decision to discontinue the X4 and Mercedes-Benz’s potential move to phase out the GLC and GLE Coupes mark a turning point in the SUV coupe market. These once-trailblazing vehicles now face a future of uncertainty, as automakers adapt to changing consumer preferences and economic realities. As the automotive world continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how manufacturers like BMW and Mercedes-Benz innovate and respond to the demand for high-performance, luxury SUVs. For now, enthusiasts of the SUV coupe segment still have time to enjoy these vehicles, but the landscape could look quite different in just a few years.

  • Jaguar Land Rover Invests £500 Million to Transition UK Plant for Electric SUV Production

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), one of the world's leading luxury car manufacturers, is making bold moves toward a sustainable future. In its latest strategic push, the British carmaker announced plans to invest £500 million ($669 million) in retooling its Halewood factory in England. This investment is set to transition the plant into an all-electric production facility, with a focus on electric SUVs, including models from its prestigious Range Rover and Land Rover lines. Accelerating the Shift to Electric Vehicles The announcement is part of Jaguar Land Rover’s broader commitment to electrification, as the global automotive industry undergoes significant transformations due to environmental regulations, market demand, and innovation. The Halewood factory, located near Liverpool, has already received a £250 million investment over the last 12 months. This additional £500 million injection will double JLR's expenditure in the facility as the company prepares to manufacture its first all-electric vehicles there. Halewood is set to become the heart of JLR’s electric vehicle (EV) transformation, positioning itself as the company’s flagship factory for producing electric SUVs. The automaker reiterated that Halewood will be its first fully electric plant—a significant milestone in the company’s “Reimagine” strategy, aimed at achieving net-zero carbon emissions across its supply chain, products, and operations by 2039. The Future of Luxury: Electrified Range Rover and Land Rover The focus on electric SUVs aligns with consumer trends toward larger, more versatile vehicles that provide both luxury and sustainability. JLR’s investment in Halewood marks a pivotal shift for the company, which is famous for its high-performance, off-road-ready Range Rovers and Land Rovers. By converting this plant to focus entirely on electric models, JLR is not just keeping up with industry standards but aiming to lead in the luxury electric vehicle market. The Range Rover, Range Rover Velar, and Land Rover Defender are among the potential models expected to see electric variants in the coming years. With the automotive world rapidly shifting to electrification, JLR’s extensive investment ensures these iconic SUVs remain competitive and meet evolving consumer expectations. Meeting the Challenges of Electrification The move to electric production is not without its challenges. Converting a traditional automotive factory into an electric vehicle plant requires significant technological upgrades, including retooling for battery production, electric drivetrains, and EV-specific software development. JLR's substantial investment underscores the company’s commitment to tackling these challenges head-on. The global automotive industry is also facing external pressures such as supply chain disruptions and raw material shortages. However, JLR appears confident in its roadmap, planning to double down on its UK operations while ensuring its flagship models are future-ready for the era of electrification. A Broader Commitment to Sustainability Jaguar Land Rover’s transition to electric aligns with broader trends across the automotive industry, where major manufacturers are pivoting toward green technologies. The UK government has announced plans to ban the sale of new petrol and diesel cars by 2030, further adding pressure on automakers to adapt. JLR's proactive stance, led by CEO Adrian Mardell, is indicative of the company’s long-term vision. By focusing on all-electric SUVs, JLR is positioning itself as a leader in both luxury and sustainability, making sure its customers don’t have to choose between performance and environmental responsibility. Final Thoughts Jaguar Land Rover’s £500 million investment in retooling its Halewood plant is a game-changer, not just for the company but for the automotive industry as a whole. This bold move signifies JLR’s commitment to a greener, more sustainable future while maintaining the luxury, performance, and versatility that the Range Rover and Land Rover brands are known for. With Halewood set to become JLR’s first fully electric factory, the future of luxury electric SUVs looks promising. As electric vehicle adoption continues to rise globally, Jaguar Land Rover is making sure its iconic vehicles remain at the forefront of this evolution. #JAGUAR #landrover #JaguarFPACE #RangeRoverSport #rangerovervelar

  • How to clean an engine air filter

Learn to clean and preserve your engine air filer in 7 easy steps There are many car maintenance tasks that you can do yourself without much difficulty. An important one is cleaning and maintaining your car’s air filter. This filter is important because it allows air to combine with your fuel to cause combustion and power the engine. If the filter is dirty and not taken care of then this can greatly impact the car’s performance. Instead of paying a professional to clean it or replace it entirely, you can clean it and put it back in yourself if it's still in good condition. Here is a detailed guide on how to clean an engine air filter. Tools you’ll need K&N Air Filter Cleaning Kit - $21.99 at Amazon AEM 1-1000 Air Filter Cleaner with Trigger Sprayer - $23.06 at Amazon Rubbermaid Roughneck Heavy-Duty Utility Bucket - $14.99 at Amazon Flexzilla Garden Lead-In Hose - Starts at $11.19 at Amazon Schneider Nitrile Exam Gloves - Starts at $7.99 at Amazon Instructions on how to clean an engine air filter Step 1: Make sure the engine is turned off and has time to cool Turn the vehicle off and let it sit for about 15 minutes. You want the engine to cool down before you start working under the hood. Step 2: Remove the old air filter Start off by pulling the hood release latch and propping open the hood. Pull the latches attached to the air filter housing and lift up the mechanism and put it somewhere safe. Then grab the air filter and inspect the condition of it. Step 3: Spray and clean the air filter Take an all-purpose cleaner and spray the filter thoroughly. Let the filter soak for about 10 minutes. Step 4: Rinse the filter with water Spray the filter with water to wash off the cleaning solution. It’s best to use a garden hose for this, but if you don’t have one then use a bucket of water instead. Step 5: Give it time to dry Take the filter and give it a good shake to remove any excess water. Then let the filter sit and air dry. Step 6: Lubricate and replace If you have an oiled filter, then lubricate the filter with oil and then place it back into the filter housing. If you have a dry filter, then there is no need to lubricate it and you can just put it back into the housing. Step 7: Put the rest of the engine air filter mechanism back together Once the air filter is put back in, then place the rest of the mechanism back into place. Make sure it’s properly snapped into place then close the hood. Now you have a clean filter and are ready to hit the road. How to clean an engine air filter FAQs What is an engine air filter? An engine air filter is a part of the car that makes sure air is able to reach the engine to create combustion to power the engine. The filter does this by catching harmful particles such as dirt, dust, pollen and other airborne contaminants. Making sure your air filter is clean and well-maintained will greatly help your engine performance and extend the life of your engine. How do you know if an engine air filter needs to be replaced? There are a few signs from your car that your air filter may need to be cleaned or fully replaced. Signs include lack of acceleration, black smoke coming out of the exhausts, a massive drop in fuel economy, rough idling, an unusual odor or a check engine light are common factors. If you follow the instructions from the guide above and you are still noting problems, then you may need to get your filter replaced. Oiled vs dry air filters Oiled air filters offer better filtration but are much more expensive and harder to clean compared to dry air filters. Oiled filters are best for performance and off-roading vehicles while dry air filters are best suited for everyday driving

  • 2024 Lexus GX 550 Premium+ gear hauling test in Oregon

Kayak on the roof. Bike on the hitch. Varied gear in the cargo area JAMES RISWICK Aug 2nd 2024 at 6:01AM 5 2024 Lexus GX 550 Premium with kayak and bike front / Image Credit: James Riswick View 35 Photos BEND, Oregon – “I hope it’s worth the noise!” I kept hearing Richard Lewis announcing that, with grand horns blaring inches from his head, in that cinematic classic, “ Robin Hood: Men in Tights .” For more than 13 hours, I drove the 2024 Lexus GX 550 Premium+ along California and Oregon highways at a steady 70 mph. Any faster, and the wind noise would elevate from a steady roar to booming. Not because of the GX, mind you – it’s surprisingly quiet for a box on wheels with mirrors shaped like a hardcover book – but because of the full-roof accessory roof rack I requested be installed for my journey from Agoura Hills outside Los Angeles to Bend in central Oregon. As I described in Part 1 of my GX outdoor adventure road trip story , the accessory rack was necessary because the Premium and Luxury trim levels do not come with the Overtrail’s raised roof rails that let you install your own crossbars or other racks (such as the Yakima crossbars I own). While I could’ve requested Lexus install the $ 440 cross bar official accessory, I opted for the $1,580 accessory “Roof Rack.” It would look a lot cooler, for starters, which I have to imagine is why I so frequently see such full-roof racks on Land Rover Defenders , Mercedes G 550s and other luxury off-roaders. Relatedly, it seems like the sort of thing someone would be likely to fit to their GX; trying it out therefore seemed useful for reporting purposes. I was also on a mission to use it for transporting a rented kayak once in Bend, and it sure seemed like it would be more useful than plain-old crossbars. But to know for sure, I asked the expert opinion of Danielle, the friendly employee of Bend Kayak School and Rentals (pictured above left) that set me up with a lovely yellow tandem kayak and the straps needed to make sure it stayed atop the GX. “So, I’m borrowing this car. I was wondering if that big rack up there actually makes a difference for transporting and securing kayaks?” I asked as she secured the front strap onto the little tow hook that’s apparently just underneath the right side of the bumper. She knew it was probably there, I didn’t. “Oh yeah. All that extra surface area is going to make it a lot more stable, and make it easier to get up there,” Danielle reported to my relief. It was worth the noise, it was! Obviously, the GX is quite a tall vehicle; in fact, it’s exactly as tall as me at 6-foot-3. My father is 6-foot-even, so we’re as close to a best-case scenario apart from some former basketball players. Still, it was quite a hoist to get the big tandem kayak off and later up there again. Danielle is barely cracking 5-feet, however, so she expertly used the door sills and doors to hoist herself and the kayak up. Not her first rodeo. Personally, if I were going to be routinely transporting a kayak places, I’d probably get a wagon because of the lower roof. I wonder if Audi sells a full-length platform roof rack for the RS 6 Avant ? ( Strokes chin.) The rack wasn’t the only gear-hauling accessory I brought along on the trip – the Yakima StageTwo heavy-duty bike rack that made its debut last year when I made a similar trip with a Honda Pilot TrailSport also made the journey. Every GX comes standard with a 2-inch trailer hitch, which is “hidden” behind a curiously conspicuous panel. It pops off easily — I used a flat-head screw driver to pull out a pair of plastic pins, which pop back in just as easily enough. There were no issues installing or uninstalling the rack, which is more a credit to the Yakima, but the Lexus GX gets a pretty big shout-out, too, as it proved to be perfectly set up for carrying a bike back there. You see, the rack folds up when not in use and folds down when you need access to the liftgate; when loaded with a bike, it tilts down to let the liftgate swing up. However, that functionality was often not needed at all thanks to the GX’s pop-up rear window. I could just walk up, pop open the window, and easily drop in or pick out items in the cargo area without touching the bike rack. I had known the pop-up rear window could be useful, but I didn’t know about this. By contrast, the Land Rover Defender and specifically its jumbo, door-mounted tire made using my bike rack difficult (I couldn’t use the inboard platform). I could even pop the glass with the kayak in place. Barely, but it was still more do-able than attempting to open the whole hatch with the strap in place.  Now, above you'll also see that I discovered the bike rack can double as a river float tube rack. Sweet. Sure beats inflating it at the river (though the GX has a power outlet to do so), trying to tie it to the roof rack (lamest roof-mounted wheel ever) or trying to stuff inside. I probably could have, though, as the GX's boxiness proved time and time again to be a boon for packing whatever inside. Ironically, I didn’t bring any of my usual luggage test bags , instead opting for smaller soft-case bags that were easier to load given the large, awkwardly shaped items that needed to come along as well. That included a fold-up Thule stroller, a child bike seat, helmets, a kid’s balance bike, inflatable rafts, small oars, camp chairs and a box of groceries. I actually had room left over, so I’m pretty happy with the amount of cargo volume present. As a refresher, I was meeting my family in Bend (my wife, 3-year-old son, mother and father). Although we could technically all fit in two rows, my son’s jumbo car seat makes that awfully squishy. As such, we kept the driver-side third-row up. My wife, who is 5-foot-zip, reports that it was perfectly comfortable back there and also liked that the GX’s boxiness makes it less claustrophobic than in other third rows. With the passenger-side third-row seat lowered, we had enough room for the stroller, kid’s bike and various backpacks for our various adventures. Basically, the GX having one of the least useful spaces behind its third row wasn’t a hindrance on this trip. Interior storage is sufficient. The cupholders are big enough to hold a wine-bottle-sized water bottle, and the door holders are similarly as wide (though the armrest above requires a slightly smaller bottle). The wireless phone charger is conveniently located and didn’t roast my phone. On the other hand, the amount of center console real estate devoted to the cigarette lighter power port and the little door that covers it seems like a waste and the surround wood trim unimpressive. Also, I don’t think the little storage shelf on the passenger side is that useful. As for technology, this GX already received the over-the-air update that keeps the native infotainment system shortcut buttons on screen while using Apple CarPlay . This is a game-changer. The Toyota Land Cruiser I had the following week hadn’t been updated, and the need to constantly go back and forth between the Apple and Toyota systems is endlessly annoying. Now, I can’t say the GX’s bigger screen makes much of a difference versus the Land Cruiser ’s (14 vs 12.3 inches), since the extra real estate is entirely devoted to the climate controls. Those are regular buttons in the Land Cruiser. The GX’s touchscreen controls work fine, they also stay permanently docked and still have physical temperature knobs, but I can’t say it makes much of a difference. If anything, I prefer the little ledge under the Land Cruiser’s screen that lets you steady your hand while making inputs. To be honest, the Lexus infotainment system gave me the most pause as I contemplated spending 25-plus hours with it, but it ultimately was just fine. As I described in Part 1, the driver assistance tech proved to be the greater annoyance, but the offending features at least stayed off. Ultimately, from a driving, practicality and functionality perspective, the Lexus GX 550 Premium+ greatly exceeded my expectations. Now, I only dipped a toe into its full outdoor adventure capability since the furthest I took it off road was on some unpaved parking lots. There is therefore even more versatility here, but given its off-roading capability contributes to its poor fuel economy , it’s hard not to wonder if the trade-off is worth it if you don’t routinely venture to more rugged places. I suppose a similar argument can be made about that full-roof rack: Unless you’re going to be doing your fair share of kayaking or roof tenting, you may want to skip it – even if it always looks cool. It probably won’t be worth the noise

  • 2024 Toyota Landcruiser Review

    # **By Simon Mabera** The anticipation for the all-new 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser is palpable, and for good reason. This latest iteration of the iconic SUV represents a significant departure from its predecessors, offering both advantages and drawbacks. On the positive side, it is more affordable than previous models, yet it comes with compromises that may affect its long-term durability and appeal to traditional Land Cruiser enthusiasts. Here’s an in-depth look at what the 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser brings to the table. ### Pros: - **Go-anywhere capability**: True to its heritage, the new Land Cruiser maintains its off-road prowess. - **Strong hybrid power**: The new hybrid powertrain offers robust performance and better fuel economy. - **Huge boxy cargo area**: The design maximizes cargo space, making it practical for various uses. - **Great visibility**: The large windows and high seating position provide excellent visibility. - **Cool looks**: Its rugged and stylish exterior is sure to turn heads. ### Cons: - **Pricey 1958 variant**: The stripped-down 1958 model is expensive considering its hard plastic interior and limited features. - **Complex hybrid system**: The new hybrid powertrain is more complex than the traditional setups, which could affect long-term reliability. ### A New Direction The 2024 Land Cruiser is built on Toyota’s increasingly versatile truck platform, which also supports the Tundra, Tacoma, Sequoia, new 4Runner, Lexus GX, and the Lexus LX (the "real" Land Cruiser sold overseas). This platform ensures robust performance but signifies a departure from the overbuilt, ultra-durable Land Cruisers of the past. The new model is most similar to the Lexus GX, sharing many design cues and underpinnings. However, the Land Cruiser is positioned as a more rugged, less luxurious alternative. It features a turbocharged four-cylinder hybrid powertrain that delivers significantly better fuel economy compared to both the old Land Cruiser and the GX. ### Off-Road Capability While the new Land Cruiser lacks the GX Overtrail's KDSS automatically disconnecting stabilizer bars, it compensates with a manually disconnecting bar, staying true to its off-roading roots. This feature enhances its off-road performance, allowing for greater articulation on rough terrains. ### Variants Toyota offers two main variants of the new Land Cruiser (plus a loaded First Edition): the stripped-down Land Cruiser 1958 and the more upscale Land Cruiser. The differences between these variants are substantial: - **Land Cruiser 1958**: Priced at around $55,000, this variant has a minimalist approach with rock-hard plastics in the interior. This might be disappointing given the price, as many other SUVs in this range offer more comfort and features. - **Land Cruiser**: This variant is more in line with what buyers expect from a modern SUV at this price point. It offers better interior quality and more features, justifying its cost and living up to the Land Cruiser's legacy. ### Conclusion The 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser is a mixed bag. It’s a lot cheaper and more fuel-efficient, but it comes with trade-offs in terms of sophistication and potential durability. For suburban use, it should be more than sufficient, maintaining Toyota's reputation for reliability and off-road capability. However, those looking for the overbuilt, nearly indestructible Land Cruiser of yesteryears might find this new model lacking. Whether it will stand the test of time like its predecessors remains to be seen.

  • "Discovering the Lucrative Opportunities of Exporting Range Rovers to Kenya and Tanzania from the UK"

Title: "Exploring the Range Rover Market in the UK and the Advantages of Selling to Kenya and Tanzania Through Let Lystra Automart" When it comes to luxury SUVs, the Range Rover stands out as a timeless symbol of elegance and performance. In the United Kingdom, the Range Rover holds a special place in the automotive market, known for its blend of luxury, off-road capabilities, and British heritage. However, recent trends have shown a growing interest in exporting these luxury vehicles to countries like Kenya and Tanzania, facilitated by companies like Let Lystra Automart. Let’s delve into the Range Rover market in the UK and why selling through Let Lystra Automart to Kenya and Tanzania could be a lucrative option. The Range Rover Market in the UK: The United Kingdom has long been a stronghold for the Range Rover brand. With a rich history and a loyal customer base, the UK market showcases a strong demand for these luxury vehicles. However, factors such as high taxes, maintenance costs, and depreciation rates can impact the resale value of these vehicles over time. As a result, selling a Range Rover in the UK might not always yield the best returns for the seller, especially if the vehicle is a few years old. Selling to Kenya and Tanzania Through Let Lystra Automart: Let Lystra Automart provides a gateway to the East African market, where the demand for luxury SUVs like the Range Rover is steadily increasing. Here are a few reasons why selling your Range Rover through Let Lystra Automart to Kenya and Tanzania could be a profitable decision: 1. Better Prices: The market dynamics in Kenya and Tanzania differ from the UK, and as a result, the resale value of luxury vehicles like the Range Rover can be higher in these regions. By leveraging Let Lystra Automart's expertise and network, sellers can secure better prices for their vehicles compared to the UK market. 2. Growing Demand: East Africa is witnessing a rise in disposable incomes and a burgeoning middle class, leading to an increased demand for luxury vehicles. The exclusivity and prestige associated with owning a Range Rover make it a sought-after choice in these markets. 3. Reduced Depreciation: Selling your Range Rover to Kenya and Tanzania through Let Lystra Automart can help mitigate the rapid depreciation often seen in the UK market. This can result in a more favorable return on investment for the seller. 4. Streamlined Process: Let Lystra Automart offers a seamless and hassle-free selling process, handling logistics, paperwork, and negotiations on behalf of the seller. This makes the entire transaction smooth and efficient. In conclusion, while the UK remains a key market for the Range Rover, exploring opportunities in emerging markets like Kenya and Tanzania through Let Lystra Automart can provide sellers with a chance to maximize the value of their luxury SUVs. With a combination of higher resale prices, growing demand, and a simplified selling process, it's clear why this could be the best choice for those looking to sell their Range Rover for a competitive price.

  • Volkswagen Tiguan (2024 - ) review

Volkswagen has launched an all-new Tiguan SUV, with a much-improved plug-in hybrid system and artificial intelligence in the dashboard Running costs for a Volkswagen Tiguan “Volkswagen reckons the plug-in hybrid has enough electric range to cover 99 percent of an average driver’s journeys” What’s going to trip up the Tiguan in this section is its price. The most affordable version, using a 1.5-litre mild-hybrid petrol engine, is priced well above rivals from the likes of Hyundai and Kia. The posh R-Line specification and the plug-in hybrid engine cost considerably more. Some of that will be defrayed by running costs, at least potentially so, and that’s thanks to the Tiguan’s impressive 62-mile electric-only range on a full charge of its 19kWh battery. Indeed, Volkswagen reckons that’s enough electric range to cover 99 percent of an average driver’s journeys, so owners may not need to resort to petrol power very much at all. As with all plug-in hybrids, keep the battery charged up and running costs will be minimised. Those sticking with the diesel model are likely to get around 50mpg in daily driving but will pay a higher VED road tax rate than for the e-Hybrid. The mild-hybrid 1.5 petrol is likely to get around 40mpg on average. Expert rating: 3/5 Reliability of a Volkswagen Tiguan “All of the engines are carried over from well-proven previous models” Volkswagen seems to have rediscovered its build-quality mojo with this Tiguan, and the impressive solidity of the cabin — and the fact that aside from the plug-in hybrid, all the engines are carried over from well-proven previous models — suggests that long-term reliability shouldn’t be an issue for the Tiguan. Choose the simplest 2.0-litre diesel version if you want the ultimate in reliability, but we doubt that the hybrids — which use the well-known 1.5-litre TSI petrol engines as their core — will give you much trouble. The much-improved infotainment system should also cause fewer headaches than before. Expert rating: 4/5 Safety for a Volkswagen Tiguan “Even the most affordable versions come with an impressive suite of safety equipment” The latest Tiguan has not yet been assessed by Euro NCAP, but even the most affordable versions come with an impressive suite of safety equipment, including ISOFIX anchors on the outer two rear seats for child seats and the front passenger seat. Active safety systems include driver attention and drowsiness monitoring, road sign and speed limit recognition, lane change assist and lane keeping steering, emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, and a system that recognises if you’re about to turn across another car at a junction. All models get front and rear parking sensors, plus a reversing camera. Expert rating: 4/5 How comfortable is the Volkswagen Tiguan “Comfort is the new Tiguan’s stock-in-trade” Comfort is the new Tiguan’s stock-in-trade. It starts with exceptionally supportive front seats (which are more or less identical to those used in the more luxurious Volkswagen Touareg SUV) which can be upgraded with heating, cooling and massaging functions. Space in the front of the cabin is excellent, but it’s even better in the rear where you’re unlikely to run out of legroom or headroom even with very tall passengers on board. The boot is large, holding 652 litres for diesel and petrol models, but shrinks a bit (to 490 litres) for the e-Hybrid model, as the high-voltage battery eats into boot space. Those in the back seats also get plenty of storage, with small pockets on the backs of the front seats for phones and earbud cases, as well as useful door bins. Crucially for kids and their comfort, the windows are also large and give a good view out. Expert rating: 4/5 Features of the Volkswagen Tiguan “Major features are much easier to find, and the on-screen climate controls are far easier to use” Volkswagen, following several years of complaints about its fiddly and awkward infotainment systems, has gone back to scratch and developed a new system, called MIB4. The effort shows. Whether you’re using the standard 12.9-inch touchscreen or the monster 15-inch optional screen, the software now seems much more responsive and quicker to use, and its menu layout is more sensible. Major features are much easier to find, and the on-screen climate controls are far easier to use. The touch-sensitive ‘slider’ controls for heating and stereo volume below the screen are now backlit, so are easier to use at night, but they can still be over-sensitive to touch. Down on the centre console, and behind the twin (cooled) wireless phone charging pads, the Tiguan now gets a new physical switch — a neat little rotary controller that can take care of stereo volume or, at the swipe of its small built-in screen, also change the driving modes from Eco to Comfort to Sport. Swipe again, and it controls the ‘Atmospheres’ — a series of pre-loaded settings (labelled ‘Lounge’, ‘Joy’ and the like) which alter the interior lighting, stereo settings and climate settings to change the interior atmosphere. It’s a bit gimmicky, but you might have fun with it. There’s also integration of ChatGPT AI into the ‘IDA’ voice control system. The ChatGPT software doesn’t control anything on the car — so there are fewer worries about privacy or the machines taking over — but it’s there to provide entertainment (it’ll make up a story for your kids, for instance) or information (such as the history of a local landmark). It’s a bit clunky to use, and the overly robotic voice is a bit off-putting, but Volkswagen says it will improve and become more useful with software updates. Expert rating: 4/5 Power for a Volkswagen Tiguan “The cabin’s comfort and the impressive refinement make it an effortless long-haul cruiser” Buyers can choose from a 2.0-litre 150-horsepower TDI diesel, or the 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol mild-hybrid engine in two different power outputs at the basic end of the Tiguan lineup. These are bolstered by more powerful 2.0-litre petrol engines, and a more powerful diesel, but the stars of the show are likely to be the two plug-in hybrid e-Hybrid models. Both use the same 1.5-litre TSI petrol engine as their basis, and there’s a choice of versions. We’re testing the 204-horsepower version here. The battery pack has been increased in capacity over the old Tiguan plug-in hybrid (from 10kWh to 19kWh) and the effect of that is considerably more range — as mentioned, you can go for as much as 62 miles on one charge according to the official number, and that’s a realistic proposition, too. Get both the engine and the 85kW electric motor going at the same time, and there’s reasonable performance, but inevitably the Tiguan e-Hybrid’s chunky kerb weight takes the edge off things. Think of it as reasonably swift, rather than out and out fast. While the Tiguan handles safely, if unexcitingly, on a twisty road, it really comes into its own on a main road or motorway, where the cabin’s comfort and the impressive refinement make it an effortless long-haul cruiser. Buyers can fit the Tiguan with DCC Pro adaptive suspension as an option, with the promise of sharper handling and a softer ride, but most people will probably just leave the system in Comfort mode anyway, so it might not be worth the extra outlay.

  • Volkswagen has now integrated ChatGPT for smarter driving

Volkswagen has unveiled a significant advancement at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The company has integrated ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence-based chatbot, into its IDA voice assistant, marking a new era in automotive technology. Set to make its debut in vehicles in the second quarter of 2024; this integration will offer customers access to an ever-expanding database of AI. ChatGPT is known for its intelligence and conversational abilities. Notably, the ChatGPT integration via Cerence Chat Pro will not have access to any vehicle-specific information, ensuring privacy and data protection for users. The collaboration with Cerence Chat Pro The innovation leverages Cerence Chat Pro and extends the capabilities of the IDA voice assistant, enabling users to control various aspects such as infotainment, navigation, air conditioning, and even seek answers to general knowledge questions. Moreover, this integration serves as a foundation for the continuous evolution of AI capabilities, offering additional information and assistance intuitively and hands-free during journeys The incorporation of ChatGPT within Volkswagen vehicles represents a significant step forward in enhancing the driving experience. It aims to enrich interactions, provide useful information, and foster a more seamless and informed journey for users, all while prioritizing safety and hands-free convenience. The collaboration between Volkswagen and Cerence Inc. underscores the commitment to advancing automotive technology, creating a new standard for intelligent voice assistants within vehicles. As Volkswagen leads the charge as the first volume manufacturer to offer ChatGPT as a standard feature, it marks an advancement in integrating sophisticated AI technology into everyday driving experiences.

  • Leaked document suggests end is near for Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392

The first (and very likely last) factory-built V8-powered Jeep Wrangler might not be long for this world. Although nothing is official, a leaked document suggests that the Rubicon 392 will soon sail into the sunset and that Jeep will send it off with a Final Edition-branded trim level. Spotted by enthusiast forum JL Wranglers, the document was written by Jeep and sent to the top 50 stores in three regions. Their challenge is to sell more of a given model in January 2024 than in January 2023. The prize? One stock allocation for the Rubicon 392 Final Edition. This is news; Jeep hasn't announced what the future holds for the Rubicon 392. It also hasn't confirmed whether the document is official, let alone detailed a Final Edition model. However, we've seen other desirable models built by Stellantis-owned brands get sent off with a Final Edition model in the past few months. That's how the Ram 1500 TRX bowed out, while Dodge's Challenger and Charger spawned a series of Final Edition-like limited-edition variants bundled under the Last Call umbrella. It stands to reason that Jeep would follow this path, too. Our crystal ball tells us a 392 Final Edition would land as a limited-edition model. It would likely cost more than the standard model, and odds are it would look a little different as well. Jeep could add equipment and offer Final Edition-specific colors, wheels, and decals, for example. The V8 will leave the Jeep range at the same time as the Final Edition; the Grand Cherokee, the Wagoneer, and the Grand Wagoneer aren't available with more than six cylinders. Chrysler and Dodge no longer sell V8s and Maserati built its last V8 in December of 2023, meaning Ram's trucks will be the last Stellantis products offered with eight cylinders... at least for now. Several aftermarket companies sell kits that make swapping a V8 into a Wrangler relatively straight-forward, however, so enthusiasts who want to build their own 392-like off-roader aren't out of luck. As for the challenge, dealers in California, Denver, the Midwest, and the West have to sell more new Wranglers in January 2024 than in January 2023. Stores in the Northwest, the Southeast, the Southwest, and the Mid-Atlantic area need to beat January 2023's Grand Cherokee sales, while those in the Great Lakes will need to focus on both SUVs. Keep this in mind if you're in the market for a new Jeep.

Nissan Frontier: The Frontier offers a no-nonsense approach to truck ownership, with a reputation for ruggedness and dependability. Its smaller size compared to full-size trucks makes it a practical choice for urban environments while still providing ample utility. 6. GMC Sierra 1500: Sharing much of its DNA with the Silverado, the Sierra 1500 offers a slightly more upscale and refined experience. A used Sierra 1500 can provide a premium feel without the premium price tag. 7. Chevrolet Colorado: Another midsize option, the Colorado is known for its comfortable ride, capable engines, and a range of configurations to suit different needs. It's a great choice for those who need a truck that's easier to maneuver in tight spaces.
